You may feel embarrassed talking about your 💩 but it’s an important conversation that you should be having with your doctor at your regular checkups. Unfortunately most doctors don’t even ask their patients about their 💩, which is a shame because it can tell you a lot about your health. I’m often surprised at how many people think they have normal BMs when they actually don’t.
If your body isn’t getting rid of waste efficiently, you’re basically holding in the stuff your body is trying to get rid of (toxins, excess hormones, cholesterol, etc) and adding to your body’s toxic load. This can lead to a slew of health issues.
You and your kids should be having DAILY BMs. Not every other day or every third day, but EVERY SINGLE DAY. I know that anywhere from 3x per day to once every 3 days is considered “normal” but “normal” is not the same as OPTIMAL.
Think about it. Does holding WASTE in your body for 3 days sound like a good idea? The longer it sits in your colon, the longer your body is reabsorbing what it was trying to excrete. Having too many bowel movements a day isn’t optimal either because then your body doesn’t have enough time to efficiently absorb nutrients from your food.
The shape and consistency of your bowel movements is the best indicator of whether or not you’re eliminating at the right frequency for your body. Inspect your BMs and compare them to the Bristol stool chart above. You should be striving for type 4, but type 3 is okay once in a while too. If you or your kids regularly have 💩 that looks like any of the other types, that’s a problem.
As a holistic nutritionist it’s part of my job to talk to you about your 💩 (or your kids 💩) and give you recommendations to get it to type 4. While it’s not a cause for concern to occasionally have stool that looks like the other types, if it is a regular occurrence it is likely a sign of digestive issues. Hyppocrates wasn’t lying when he said, “all disease begins in the gut” – bowel movements can be an early warning sign that can lead to bigger issues if ignored. Stagnant elimination will increase your body’s toxic load and if your body is not eliminating toxins efficiently those toxins can build up and wreak havoc in your body.
